Kisumu is Kenya’s third largest city and its principal port on Lake Victoria, sitting in the Winam Gulf in the far west of the country.
It grew as the terminus of the Uganda Railway, completed in 1901, and its position on the lake made it the commercial gateway to the whole Lake Victoria basin. The old railway station and pier still stand.
The city is the heart of Luo country and has long been central to Kenyan political and cultural life, with a strong tradition of music, particularly benga, which developed here before spreading across East Africa.
For visitors Kisumu offers lakeside sunsets, Dunga fishing village, the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary on the shore and Kit Mikayi rock outside the city, along with a considerably more relaxed pace than Nairobi.
