Babati is a small town on the shore of Lake Babati in northern Tanzania, sitting on the main road between Arusha and Dodoma at around 1,400 metres.
It is the administrative centre of Manyara Region and a working agricultural town rather than a tourist destination, serving a fertile farming area that produces maize, beans and sunflower.
The lake immediately beside the town holds a substantial hippo population, and canoe trips out among them are the one activity most visitors come for. Mount Kwaraha rises to 2,415 metres a short distance to the south-east and can be climbed in a long day.
Babati works best as an overnight stop for travellers driving between the northern circuit and central Tanzania, or as an approach to Tarangire from the south, which very few itineraries use.
